Nelsonville Star Brick Oxidized Copper and Sterling Silver Pendant
Item Description
P-119
At one time, southeast Ohio had many brick works, including the Nelsonville Brick Company. Between 1877 and 1940 five different brick kilns in Nelsonville, Ohio made bricks for sidewalks, roads, buildings and water/sewer systems. Of all the brick designs that came from these brick works, the star brick paver became the best known. Each star brick has two six point stars, surrounded by a grid. So, double star brick pendants have four stars, a half brick pendant has one star, and a full brick pendant has two stars.
If you visit Nelsonville, these beautiful bricks can be found around the fountain in the town square, and many other places as well. Star brick pottery, fabrics, prints, candy and numerous other items with the star brick design are sold in Nelsonville shops.
This full brick star brick pendant is oxidized copper, with a triple sterling silver jump ring bail. The jump rings are 7 mm inside diameter and will allow most chains to be used with this pendant. Each star brick is hand stamped, then sawn out by hand. Each brick must then be filed and sanded before the sterling silver jump ring that holds the bail rings is soldered on. After the initial polish, the bricks are oxidized, then given a final polish. Copper bricks are coated with museum grade wax to maintain the patina, however the copper bricks will require cleaning. Any copper cleaner will work: I use Flitz.
